Research Methods in Anthropology: Fieldwork, Observation & PYQs | UPSC
What are Research Methods in Anthropology?
Research Methods in Anthropology refer to the qualitative and quantitative empirical techniques used by anthropologists to gather holistic ethnographic data. Anchored in long-term, intensive fieldwork tradition pioneered by Bronislaw Malinowski, these methods emphasize participant observation, genealogies, key informant interviews, and life histories to understand cultural phenomena from an emic (insider) perspective.
Core Anthropological Fieldwork Methods
| Method | Pioneer / Key Figure | Core Objective & Utility |
|---|---|---|
| Participant Observation | Bronislaw Malinowski (Trobriand Islands) | Living among the community to record the "imponderabilia of actual life" and gain an emic view. |
| Genealogical Method | W.H.R. Rivers (Torres Straits Expedition) | Mapping kinship, lineage ties, inheritance patterns, and social organization. |
| Case Study & Life History | Paul Radin & Oscar Lewis | In-depth qualitative study of individual lives or critical events to capture cultural dynamics over time. |
| Emic vs. Etic Approach | Kenneth Pike & Marvin Harris | Distinguishes native internal explanations (Emic) from scientific observer analysis (Etic). |

Limitations and Ethical Issues in Fieldwork
- Subjectivity & Subject Bias: The researcher's presence can alter natural behavior (Hawthorne effect) or lead to subjective interpretation.
- Ethical Dilemmas: Informed consent, protecting sensitive tribal secrets, avoiding exploitation, and managing rapport vs. detachment.
- Replicability Issue: Qualitative field findings are highly contextual and difficult to independently verify or replicate.
